Hello! Yours seems to be the only in depth study of the Murrell family tree on the internet. My grandmother was named Florence Murrell, and her sisters were named Rose and Dora. They were born in Birmingham between 1890 and 1900. I know nothing of their parents, other than their surname. Not sure if this is of use to you, or if you know of anyone researching this branch of the family? Good luck in your work. Regards, Sarah

Your site is saving me a lot of hours. I stumbled on it when looking for my ancester Ellen Robinson, born in Orsett abt 1814. Putting that in Google brought your site up and more Robinsons than I know what to do with. My Ellen Robinson married (baptised 18th sept 1814) a Wiiliam Armstrong (Scottish soldier)in Woolwich in 1839, had a child called Janet who was my mother's grandmother. My mother was a Browne, but I don't think related to the one in your tree. Mum married a Welshman in Wales. Although one of my brothers now lives in Southend I live in Cornwall which makes looking in Essex records a slow business. Incedentally Ellen's elder sister Emma, baptised 27th Sept 1812, was born 30th Aug 1811. Thank you for your site Regards John

Nice site. Enjoyed your interest in Carriers. I was arrester gear officer in EAGLE when we were trialling the water tube gear which eventually went into ARK Royal.RAE BEDFORD did brilliant work to develop this gear. Was then Flight Deck Engineer in ARK ROYAL and then trials and design approval manager at DG Ships, Bath. Anyone who has not worked on a carrier flight deck with steam catapults has missed an engineering treat!!! Regards from Gold Coast, Australia

Hi, I am looking for descendents of the Bowers family in Newcastle, England. My mother was born there, her mother was Rebecca Moffat, who died at age 30. She had married John George Bowers. who was from Sunderland, I believe. Rebecca Moffat Bowers died in 1900. My mother was born in 1897. She had a brother Robert, then later a step-mother, Martha, and 3 step-sisters and one or two step-brothers. They emigrated to Illinois early 1900's.

A chap recently e-mailed me addressing me as Commander Goodhart. In my reply I suggested his sources were a bit out of date as I had not been a Cdr since 1960 and had retired as a Rear Admiral in 1973. He said he had got the title from your website which is how I come to be visiting it. Excellent piece you have written about the angle, mirror, steam catapult. If i may offer one small criticism, I am not confident that your average reader will recognise square lights/reflections as easily as they would circular. As a matter of interest it looks more like the reflection of a low sun in a bad mirror. Good luck. Nick Goodhart

I think I've spotted a few other descendants on this noticeboard - hello there! Best of luck with your OU courses. I have found out so much and I am pretty certain I have tracked the right history. I am an Ellingford by origin and thought it would be easy with such an unusual name, not quite. My great-grandmother I think is Mary Ann Martha Ellingford there is nothing about her on the sight, I do know she never married but had a son William David which I am having difficulty tracing. When she was alive she was visited by a neice called Rose if this sounds familiar to anyone please contact me I would be so grateful. Steven. I too have an interest in Carrier Equipment, stemming from a fascinating few years at R.A.E. in the late 40s as an Experimental Officer in Cdr. Beard's Carrier Equipment Division of Boddington's Naval Aircraft Department. My main concern was with Arresting Gears, the vertical ones being proofed for the future (yes!) Ark Royal and Eagle. I'm that old. A few years ago I put together a monograph on Catapults, Arresting Gears, Barriers and Light Guided Landing Aids derived from much to-ing and fro-ing to the F.A.A.M, and various learned societies - RINA, IMechE et al. It's about 40K words long and in A5 format off the computer. If you like I'll send you a copy. No publishers that I've approached are interested - It's a bit technical of course, but Aeroplane Monthly are going to include some summaries in future. Get in touch if you're interested. No cats please - not my scene! Regards Ralph L.

Hello Steven and Linda, first time here for me, thank you for the site, shall be back to dip in as time allows. My Murrell ancestors are the Sheerness/Isle of Sheppy (& London families) shown on one of Don's chart's. Paternal gran was nee Murrell (rose Elizabeth). It has saved me much detecting to have Don's ready made version, he is marvellous, and I thank him. Reading about your computer courses made me think of Donovan, he has had to ditch his very old one. His family rallied round and he is using 'windows '95, I think he said? with all the gear, maybe coming online too? He has to learn how to use the technology though, which he said is not giving him an easy time. Brings back memories for me!! I am sure it will be second nature for him soon. I am still working on my Murrell's, have discovered on the 1901, a second wife, Christina Murrell who died (need the cert') in Maldon 1944, age 86, born in Wales, spouse of my Edward Murrell. Did I see you had Murrell's there. Probably no connection, might help eliminate if you have any loose ends though. Thank you again for this site, regards, Linda.

I can add Thomas Kett born in 1862, father Robert born Norwich 18/6/29 became City of London policeman in 1847, dismissed for leaving beat and drinking on duty! Other siblings, Robert 6/49,William 3/51, Margaret 3/53, Henry 3/58 and of course, Jane. Grandfather Robert was born in Norwich in 1804 and died in 1871. He and wife Phebe are buried in Buckhurst Hill at the parish church. They had seven chidren in all. The last four were born in Chigwell between 1834 and 1841. Henry born in 1836 was my great grandfather. He went to Wangaratta in Australia in 1857 becoming a policeman, then publican and Hotelier;died in 1882.

Dear Sir or Madam, We were in Hockley on last December 30th, as we are very much interested in a person called Alexander ZASS. We want to write an article about Zass for an Odessa newspaper. Zass was a very famous athlete and strong man, born in Russia. He had a big influence on the development of bodybuilding and circus techniques. He probably lived in Hockley from the twenties, and surely died there in the fifties or sixties. As far as we know, he should be buried on St Peter and Paul graveyard, but we were not able to find the tombstone. The stone should have an inscription in Russia and English. We also woul like to make contact with a Hockley couple called Estoll or Astoll; they seem to have known Zass personally. Also we are looking for his pupil, also a circus artist called Trevor Barnett. He does not seem to live in Hockley, but does sometimes come and tens the grave of his trainer. We shall be extremely grateful to you, if you could help us with our research. Yours sincerely, Sergey and Greet Zemtsov-Vanhassel Heistraat 289 2610 Antwerpen (Belgium) greet.vanhassel@pandora.be

Loved your cat story. Good luck with the OU. I was one of the "E" intake (i.e.1975) when OU was already 4 years old and went on to complete my BA (Hons). Lots of hard work but well worth it - I wanted to jack it in every time a TMA was due. I guess everyone feels like that at times, especially when friends are having fun & plenty of time to read, socialise or watch tv. Well worth it in the end, though. Regards

It would seem that you are moggie fiends. I love the pictures of your cats. I have four moglets at home Jessie, nearly 18 years, Tinky about 7 to 8 years, Tyson about 6 to 7 years (believe you me he lives up to his name) and Poppy about 5 to 6 years. The last two found me. ( I think the local cat population know that I am a soft touch!)

Steve, sorry but this is mainly for Linda - I am not being discriminating honest. Linda e-mailed me I believe last year but I have had a very poorly e-mail system since I had the BT Surf n Turf as I call it connected to the computer at home. I have been having problems receiving e-mails. Last Saturday I received some 96 e-mails from out of nowhere many going back to last year. So many apologies for me not getting back to Linda thus far. Now I am receiving e-mails I cannot send them in the usual fashion - I think there is going to be a long and expensive phone call to B.T. this Saturday morning! Anyway less of computers Linda was enquiring about the Ellingford family of which I am a junior member (although I think I am a bit older than you). My branch of the family stems from Great Wigborough i.e. from Thomas Ellingford born approximately 1714 at Great Wigborough who married an Alice Dines born approximately 1717. They were married on 6th March 1738 in Great Wigborough Parish Church. Thomas died on 10th February 1748/9 at Great Wigborough. I have lots of other information - you may be able to help me make sense of some of it. Unfortunately my branch of the family was well away from the main lot down in Essex. My Great Grandfather Horace Senior was one of 15 children. His parents were Thomas Ellingford who married a Sarah Gosling. Grat Granddad Horace moved up to Lincoln with the Railways (he was a boilermaker) and he settled his family there (seven children) My grandfather was Horace Junior. My grandfather always wanted to join the Navy but my great grandfather forbade it. He ended up being a fitter/engineer (made traction engines etc that you see at the steam rallies. Horace Junior had two children Basil and Michael. I am Michael's oldest child (43 on May 3rd) I also have a brother David who has two lovely boys Christopher aged 8 and Andrew who is 4 tomorrow. I am a Legal Secretary to a Partner Solicitor who specialises in childcare matters and currently have no children of my own (although I have two step-children). I have lots of documentation you might be interested in but being as I have this temperamental e-mail at the moment I think it would be best if I mailed it to you. My home address is 151 Aldermans Drive West Town Peterborough Cambs PE3 6BB Hope to hear from you soon. Sorry to block your guestbook here but it is the only way I can do things at the moment Regards Tricia

Hello Steven Just come onto your site. I am a desendent of the Willingales via my mothers side. I have been researching the line for several years now and have traced most of the Essex Willingales back to the mid 1500's. The Willingale name suposably originates from an anglo saxon pioneer who established the now village of Willingale in Essex. Most of the family originates from Maldon Essex. If you or any others in your Guest book wants further info please contact me.

Hullo Steven Some years ago I chased my family tree back to a George Willingale born of Elizabeth (No father) at Southminster. I visited Southminster and was given access to parish records - which were incomplete - in an attempt to establish a link with Thomas of lopping rights fame. I was not confident that I had done so and suspended the search until some time in the future! I hope you manage to develop your site so as to establish TW's descendants. With your interest in the RN you may be interested to know that the vestry in Southminster church contained furniture that had been bequeathed to it my Nelson. I retired from the RN as an engineer in 94 and now have a vineyard in Wiltshire. On Dec 7th my bubbly and my table wine was used by Malmesbury Town Council for a reception for the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh - so you see at least one willingale is still persuing the rural tradition! Keep up the good work - I appreciate how much time goes into this as I maintain my own very limited site for the vineyard business at www.bowinthecloud.co.uk.

Keith Willingale

Hi - Thanks for the Family name origins and Lopping rights history - This is interesting and very useful - I can show this to my family.

Dunno if we are related - my lot originated in Leyton, London.

My family live in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

When I grew up, I had the impression the Willingale family was very small, but travelling and now via Internet, I have found references to family members all over the world.

About 20 years ago, I contacted another family who live nearby, they originated from Australia via Dundee!
